Our three-year accident frequency rate, and how we count it

We publish the figure and the method, because an AFR quoted without a method is not a number, it is a claim.

Our three-year accident frequency rate is 0.41 per 100,000 hours worked. That covers every hour worked by our own operatives and by labour-only subcontractors under our supervision, on every site and in the depot.

How the number is built

The numerator is every reportable injury plus every lost-time injury of a full shift or more. We do not exclude injuries on the walk to the welfare unit, and we do not reclassify a lost-time injury as restricted duties to keep it out of the count.

The denominator is hours actually worked, taken from the site attendance system rather than estimated from the programme.

Why publish it

Because a main contractor will ask, and because the firms that will not give you a method usually have a reason. Ask us for the underlying data at a pre-qualification meeting and you will get it.
